The Inayatiyya Hudson Valley Center is a teaching center of the Inayatiyya, which is a global organization dedicated to the Sufi message of Hazrat Inayat Khan. The Sufi message serves to awaken the wisdom of the heart and proclaim the divine unity of all people, all religions, and all existence.
“… the ultimate purpose for which the soul is seeking every moment of our life, is our spiritual purpose. And you may ask how to attain that purpose. The answer is that what you are seeking for is within yourself. Instead of looking outside, you must look within. The way to proceed to accomplish this is for some moments to suspend all your senses such as sight, hearing, smell, touch, in order to put a screen before the outside life; and by concentration and by developing that meditative quality you will sooner or later get in touch with the inner self which is more communicative, which speaks more loudly than all the noises of this world; and this gives joy, creates peace, and produces in you a self-sufficient spirit, a spirit of independence, of true liberty.” — Hazrat Inayat Khan
Our Story
The Inner School of the Inayatiyya is a school of study and practice for those who wish to travel a Sufi path toward self-realization as taught and exemplified by Hazrat Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan, Noor-un-Nisa Inayat Khan, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan and Pir Zia Inayat Khan.
The goal of the Inner School is to awaken sympathy with all and the awareness of the inner life to the point that it becomes a natural constant presence in one’s life, which is called realization.
Towards this end, the Inner School offers its members individual spiritual guidance and practices, retreats, programs and classes. As the seeker gains confidence in their developing spiritual vocation, they find inner resources to meet the needs of life at the same time they give scope to the desire of their soul. This ongoing integration is a hallmark of the method.
“…The heart is both earthly and heavenly. The heart is a receptacle on earth of the divine spirit, and when it holds the divine spirit, it soars heavenward: the wings picture its rising. The crescent in the heart symbolizes responsiveness: it is the heart that responds to the spirit of God that rises. The crescent is a symbol of responsiveness because it grows fuller by responding more and more to the sun as it progresses.
The light one sees in the crescent is the light of the sun. It gets more light with increasing response, so it becomes fuller of the light of the sun. The star in the heart of the crescent represents the divine spark reflected in the human heart as love, which helps the crescent toward its fullness…Therefore, this sentence will explain, in short, the meaning of the symbol: the heart, responsive to the light of God is liberated.”
